Tips to settle in quickly at your new home
Are you confused as to how to start settling in? These tips will give you a clear idea of how to delve into this.
Check all the major appliances
If you have moved large electronic appliances like a dishwasher, washing machine, television set, microwave oven etc. Check them first. See that they are all working. Also, check that they aren’t damaged during the move. If they have been damaged then you have to claim insurance in the specified time the insurance companies give you.
Check all the boxes
Check if all the items have been delivered and nothing is lost. If you have an inventory list then check all the items against it. Again check if there is any damage made to any of your items. Check your furniture especially. If you can see damages then without wasting any time first contact your mover and the insurance company to claim for all the damages.
Check if all the utility services are working
This is one of the priority. You can’t stay at a home having no electricity or water supply. Get this sorted out first even before you move there.
Without electricity you also won’t be able to check if the moved appliances work, so get your utility services up and running first.
Keep all the important documents safely
Once you move keep all the important documents especially the move related documents like bill of lading and payment receipt away from the mess. Keep them safe in a secured area. You also need to keep other important documents like passports and certificates safe.
Find a good school for your kids
This can also be done before you move but if you have moved to a place far away from old place you may have to look for a school now. You may first have to research for a new school and register your children in them. The sooner you do this the better, as once the school starts your children will have a routine which will help them settle in quickly.
Update your new address everywhere
Update your address in all the important files and documents. Change your address in the post office as well, so that all the mails are delivered to you at the new place.
Again, don’t forget to inform all your relatives and friends about your move.
Get friendly with your new neighbourhood
Once you get to your new home, introduce yourself to your neighbours. Walk around see where the local supermarkets, hospitals, cafes and restaurants are. You can also subscribe to a local newspaper or a community magazine this will give you an idea about the current happenings in your vicinity. You can also try to read about your area online, that might help you as well.
If you have moved cities then it’s imperative that you register yourself in the voters registration list.
